WPI Secures Software Development Grant

Worcester Polytechnic Institute has received a one-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop software tools that can detect whether students are engaged while using educational software and identify how to get more involved in using the software.

The school said it has received $277,044 from the Gates foundation. The grant is one of several investments by the foundation aimed at increasing the number of "college ready" students who will graduate from high school by 2025.

The software tools project is being led by Ryan S.J.d. Baker, a professor of psychology and learning sciences. He and his team will develop "automated detectors of learning engagement, which can be integrated with educational software." Baker said that being able to accurately measure student engagement and intervene when students are disengaged will not only result in short-term gains in learning, but can have critical long-term effects on students' academic performance and careers.
