UMass Eighth In Nation In License Revenue

Faculty from the University of Massachusetts system produced $70.5 million in licensing revenue from discoveries and products last year, which is the eighth most in the nation, according to a recent study.

The Association of University Technology Managers released the list in a recent edition of Inside Higher Ed and found that UMass beat out MIT, which ranked ninth, and Harvard, which ranked 27th. Northwestern University led the nation, collecting $161 million.

A big boost came from a $30 million upfront payment for an antibody developed at the Massachusetts Biologic Labs, which are part of the Worcester-based UMass Medical School.

The UMass system as a whole created more than 50 licenses in fiscal year 2009, including one startup company.
