John Smithhisler, president and CEO of St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, has stepped down from his post effective immediately after five years on the job, the hospital confirmed this afternoon.
Dennis Irish, vice president of marketing for Vanguard Health Systems New England, said the news was somewhat of a surprise to hospital workers Monday.
"John has done a very good job at St. Vincent and change is always unsettling for people," he said. "For most employees, I think it came as a surprise."
Vanguard, which owns St. Vincent Hospital, offered Smithhisler another position within the company as a vice president of operations in the Chicago region. Irish said Vanguard recently purchased two new hospitals in the Chicago area, and offered Smithhisler a job overseeing a total of four hospitals, including the two new ones. He declined that, Irish said.
Irish did not say if the hospital had plans to remove Smithhisler if he did not take the job.
"John was offered another position within Vanguard, he chose not to accept, but to resign instead," Irish said. "I don't know what else he may be doing."
In the meantime, Irish said that Joe Mullany, president and CEO of Vanguard Health Systems New England and Chicago Market, is at St. Vincent in Worcester overseeing operations until the hospital's board of directors names an interim president Thursday. A national search for a new president has been initiated, according to a press release from the hospital.
