Rosalie Lawless, director of human resources, Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital

Lawless

Rosalie P. Lawless is a player in all kinds of Worcester-area institutions. She's the chairperson of the Regional Employment Board of Southern Worcester County, an executive committee member at the Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board, as well as a member of two Quinsigamond Community College advisory boards. In her professional life, she recently moved from one senior human resources job, at VNA Care Network and Hospice in Worcester, to another similar position in the city at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital.

Residence: Sutton
Family: Married to Michael Jarominski, a CPA with Love, Jarominski and Raymond; three children and seven grandchildren
Education: Anna Maria College, UMass Amherst and Quinsigamond Community College
Previous Job: VP of Human Resources for VNA Care Network and Hospice
Start date of new job: Oct. 26

Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. The Human Resources Department has been extremely helpful in introducing me to the facility and various operational systems. During these first few weeks, I have had the pleasure of introducing myself to many of the hospital staff on various shifts. Administration recognizes that not all human resources activities take place within the human resources offices.

Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?

A. I have honestly not been surprised since I began my employment at Fairlawn. As a lifelong resident in the Worcester area, I have been personally and professionally aware of Fairlawn's excellent reputation in the health care community as an outstanding rehabilitation facility.
I had a family member who was a patient at Fairlawn a few years ago for multiple weeks. I was pleased, but again not surprised, that the entire Fairlawn staff continues to be focused on the patient and the patient's family.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. Transitioning from a home care environment to a rehabilitation facility with both in-patient and out-patient services, familiarizing myself with operational systems of Fairlawn, which is a joint venture of HealthSouth Corp. and UMass Memorial.

Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. This position allows me to see the patients and their families on a daily basis which reinforces why we do what we do.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?

A. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life! Sometimes I wanted to be an attorney, sometimes an FBI agent, and other times a cruise director. Obviously, my career went in another direction and I am happy with the decision I made.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. Right here at Fairlawn. We have the best food services department!

Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. Continuing to enjoy my family and friends, and my involvement in the community personally and professionally.
