It’s official: Polar Park site belongs to the city

The Polar Park baseball stadium site is now officially in the city’s hands.

The long-delayed step took place Friday when a deed for the site off Madison Street was filed with the Worcester Registry of Deeds. The sale of roughly 4 acres took place for $100.

The ballpark, which the city is building for the Worcester Red Sox, is expected to open next April. The site had been owned by Madison Properties, the Boston developer whose planned mixed-use project across Madison Street and beyond the stadium’s left field wall is expected by city officials to pay off the city’s $132-million costs for building the stadium.

The Polar Park site is owned by the Worcester Redevelopment Authority, which had already purchased or taken by eminent domain much of the remaining parcels that make up the ballpark property. Those other transactions included demolishing five commercial buildings to make way for the stadium.
