International VC Investment Falls

Venture capital investments in international markets hit $1.46 billion in the second quarter, a decrease from the $1.99 billion invested in the first quarter and 63 percent less than was invested in the first quarter last year.

The quarter's non-United States investment total was the lowest of any quarter since 2003, according to Dow Jones VentureSource. Venture investment in Europe, $831 million in 156 deals, was the lowest on record for the region.

Investors put the $1.46 billion to work for emerging companies in 250 deals in Europe, Canada, Israel, China and India. A year ago, the second quarter saw 452 deals made.

VentureSource said investors are concentrating on later-round deals in order to sustain their current portfolios.

In the U.S., venture investors put $5.27 billion into 595 deals during the quarter.
