CPI Posts Regional, National Gains

The Northeast regional consumer price index rose 3 percent in January compared to a year earlier, boosted by increases in transportation and energy indexes, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The private transportation index rose almost 14 percent compared to a year earlier, while the motor fuel index rose by more than 50 percent. The energy price index rose 16 percent regionally.

Nationwide, the CPI rose 2.6 percent over the last year, including a 0.2 percent increase from December 2009 to January 2010. Energy indexes also propped up the national CPI figures. All indexes less food and energy grew by only 1.6 percent in the past year nationwide.
