Wayland-based aesthetic device firm Candela Corp. has received federal clearance for a laser device to treat a broad range of skin conditions.

The device, the Vbeam Prima, is designed to treat rosacea, port wine stains, acne, spider veins, scars, warts and lesions.

The Prima builds on the already established Vbeam family of devices that the company says is used in nearly 700 universities and hospitals.

The redesigned system offers more power and is designed to better treat vascular lesions, such as spider veins and rosacea.

The clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration follows a clinical study that found facial redness and rosacea symptoms were dramatically reduced after four treatments using Vbeam Prima.

“This important milestone exemplifies Candela's mission of continuous innovation based on scientifically proven technologies, consistent clinical results and a trusted partnership with both patients and our medical practitioners,” CEO Geoffrey Crouse said.

The FDA clearance comes about a year after Candela’s parent company, Syneron Candela, was acquired by U.K.-based private equity firm Apax Partners for $400 million.

“Under new ownership and new management, we are recommitting to scientific leadership, real-world clinical results and long term partnerships with our customers,” Crouse said.
