American Superconductor Corp. of Devens has acquired a 25 percent ownership position in wind turbine blade manufacturer Blade Dynamics.
The 3-year-old British turbine firm builds blades with proprietary materials and structural characteristics designed to increase the efficiency and performance of very high-power turbines.
The Dow Chemical Co. also has a minority equity stake in Blade Dynamics.
AMSC said demand for turbines that can produce between 2 megawatts and 5 megawatts of power requires blade technology that reduces both weight and cost.
The company said it and Blade Dynamics are already working to optimize blades for AMSC’s Windtec turbine designs.
