The state is releasing $17.8 million in stimulus funding to allow police and fire departments to hire, rehire or retain 83 police officers and 105 firefighters.
This is the second round of such awards. The first totaled $20 million and was announced in early October.
In this round, $11.6 million will go to fire departments across the state, and $6.2 million will go to police departments. In the first round, police departments got $15.7 million.
In all, the funding will help 35 police departments and 85 fire departments. The fire department grants are from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The police department grants are through stimulus funds set aside by the Patrick administration specifically for police and fire departments.
Departments receiving grants submitted applications to the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. For a complete list of grant recipients, click here.
