101 Employee Morale | Tips for keeping spirits up when revenues are down

With the economy in a tailspin, many offices are under a tremendous amount of pressure. But there are some key ways you can make sure your employees’ morale stays positive even when times are tough. Here’s some advice:

It all starts at the top. “Adhere to, and model high professional standards for yourself,” says Joe Farcht at selfgrowth.com. “Expect and communicate the same from all who work for you.”

Accentuate the positive. The best way to avoid negativity is by not projecting it.

“Provide objective feedback that is effective in improving performance,” says Farcht. “Provide four times more positive feedback than feedback for improvement.”

First defense. “You are the guard that upholds company policy,” says Bob McKenzie at hr.com. “Become a master at holding people accountable for the effects of their interactions and behaviors in the workplace. Negativity breeds contempt. Turn your poor performers into achievers or move them out of the organization.”

A not-so-secret society. The best way to encourage enthusiasm from your employees is to make them feel a part of the process.

“Set a plan on where you want to be in three years and map out what has to be done to get there,” says McKenzie. “Share this plan with your employees. This gives employees a sense of security as well as an idea of their own opportunities for growth.”
