WRA moves ahead with lease discussions for nanobrewery, arcade bar at Union Station

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority is moving forward on lease negotiations with a nanobrewery and arcade bar and restaurant for vacant retail space in the Union Station garage.

On Friday, members voted to begin discussions with Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company and The Quarters to occupy about 8,000 square feet of vacant space.

Both companies submitted letters of interest to the WRA for the space, which has been vacant for about a decade since the garage was built.

“We feel these are good uses for the backside of that garage,” Chief Development Officer Michael Traynor told the board.

The uses will help promote activity at the edge of the Canal District, an area that is slated for a dramatic transformation after a $240 million project to build a stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox and other mixed-use developments.

Greater Good has been on Millbrook Street in Worcester for about a year, but wants to lease 2,000 square feet for its line of beers branded Soul Purpose.

The Quarters, based in Hadley, wants to expand its operations to Worcester in 6,000 square feet of space in the garage.

According to Traynor, the city is willing to provide funding for core and shell improvements, as the space is completely undeveloped.

The tenants would then fund the remaining improvements that need to be made.

The space is not exclusive to those two entities, however, and other companies can inquire, Traynor said
