Worcester company gets $174K for clean energy technology

Battery Resourcers, a Worcester company developing a lithium battery recycling technology, has received a $174,000 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center in a program aimed at helping clean energy companies.

The company was founded in 2015 from technology created by Worcester Polytechnic Institute Professor Yan Wang, who co-founded the company with former WPI Professor Eric Gratz. Since then, a series of National Science Foundation grants has helped the company along, and the company reached a milestone in 2017 with its first patent.

Battery Resourcers closed on a $1.5 million funding round last year.

The latest grant from the MassCEC's InnovateMass program, which was announced Thursday, will go toward helping the company demonstrate a zero-waste recycling system of electric vehicle batteries.

Battery Resourcers, which is based at 54 Rockdale St. near Quinsigamond Community College, was one of four companies to receive funding, along with two others in Somerville and one in Hingham. Since 2013, the program has awarded over $4 million in funding for projects across the state that are designed to test applications of new technologies.
