Worcester firm hit with $10,000 MassDEP penalty
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has penalized Jamaheja, Inc. of Worcester $10,312 for allegedly violating the Wetlands Protection Act on property located in Southbridge.
During an August inspection, MassDEP said agency officials identified alterations to wetlands at the Hunters Ridge Estates Subdivision. The Southbridge Conservation Commission had required restoration of the wetland resource area, while MassDEP ordered the company to take measures to stop discharging silt into the wetland.
“Companies doing construction near wetlands need to follow the requirements in permits issued by their local conservation commission,” Lee Dillard Adams, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said in a statement. “This is the first line of defense in preventing erosion and sedimentation, and it is especially important near steep slopes that can be more sensitive to erosion.”
The company has agreed to restore the wetland and take steps to prevent further violations, the agency said in a statement. Approximately 2,000 square feet of protected land and a 50 stream bank will be restored and protected, according to MassDEP.
Jamaheja, Inc. must pay $6,000 of the penalty, with the remaining amount suspended as long as there are no further violations over the next two years. Attempts to reach the company were unsuccessful.
