State Unemployment Climbs To 8.6% In June

The state lost 2,300 jobs in June bringing the unemployment rate up to 8.6 percent, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The state's May unemployment rate was 8.2 percent. Jobs are down by 106,400, or 3.2 percent, compared to June of 2008. The education and health services sector is the only sector of the state's economy to record job gains over the year.

In May, the state reported job gains of 4,900. That number was revised up to 5,600 as the education and health services sector and the leisure and hospitality sector recorded gains for the month.

June's largest monthly declines were in the government, construction and manufacturing sectors. The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent.
