Fallon Clinic, HealthAlliance Share Electronic Records

Worcester's Fallon Clinic has launched a secure health information exchange program in partnership with HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster.

The program is called Secure Architecture For Exchanging Health Information and it allows the hospitals to share patient records between physicians. HealthAlliance is part of the UMass Memorial Health Care system.

The program was begun by Fallon Clinic in partnership with Fallon Community Health Plan and UMass Memorial Health Care with the support of a $1.5 million health care research grant.

Fallon cited studies showing that inadequate communication between hospitals and physicians' offices causes about 2 million adverse medical events each year in the United States.

With the SAFE program, physicians can simply log into their electronic health records systems to load clinical information from one hospital to the other.
