A restaurant specializing in Brazilian-style pizza is coming to the former Helfand’s Deli site in Worcester.
Patrick Joseph of Hopkinton received the sign-off from the Worcester License Commission to open Bella Pizzeria at 143 Highland St. during the commission’s meeting on Thursday, with an intended opening date of March 30.
This will be Bella Pizzeria’s second location, with the business’ original shop being located at 126 Main St. in Milford. The menu includes pizza, salads, and esfihas, small pies containing either savory or sweet fillings which originated in Lebanon but are popular in Brazil and other South American countries.
Brazilian-style pizza is usually made with a thin crust and the traditional starting ingredients of a tomato-based sauce and mozzarella cheese. Toppings sometimes include more traditional ingredients like ham, onions, and peppers, but can involve more unconventional add-ons like Brazilian sausage, boiled eggs, or corn.
Helfand’s Deli closed in March, with the property later being purchased by CG Partners Realty One LLC, an entity based in Boston managed by Dennis Clair of Boston and Angelo Giankais of Wellesley.
Before Helfand’s, 143 Highland St. was the location of the Sahara Restaurant from the late 1990s until December 2021. The building was constructed in 1945, according to City of Worcester property records.
Eric Casey is the managing editor at Worcester Business Journal, who primarily covers the manufacturing and real estate industries.
