If you’re looking to hire people with more specialized skills, rather than someone who can perform many tasks without mastering any, you’re going with a trend, according to recent research by staffing firm Robert Half International.
A just-released, downloadable white paper, “The Specialist Economy: How Businesses and Professionals Can Prepare for the Trend Toward Specialization,” highlights the increasing demand for workers in professions requiring both a college education and specialization in areas such as health care, accounting and finance, information technology, marketing, and law.
"Firms have a critical need for laser-focused professionals who can help them grow their most lucrative service areas and maximize efficiencies," said Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half. "Full-time and temporary workers with education and concentrated knowledge can help a company operate more efficiently and competitively — top priorities in today's business environment."
Although 11.7 million Americans were unemployed as of March, many employers continue to struggle to find qualified staff, the paper said. Most executives polled by Robert Half over the past year cited recruiting challenges.
