Protonex Gets $3M Order

Protonex Technology Corp., a Southborough-based battery manufacturer, has received a $3 million government contract to further develop a portable power system for U.S. soldiers.

The company hopes to reduce the size and weight of the soldier-worn portable power managers, or SPMs, while increasing reliability, efficiency and ruggedness.

The systems are used by soldiers to power radios, computers and other military gear. High efficiency power conversion and management technologies in the systems are designed to minimize the number of batteries a soldier must carry and how often they need recharging. The company received an 18-month contract.

In June, Protonex announced it would exit European public trading markets and become a private company.
