The nation's unemployment rate rose to 8.5 percent in March, up from 8.1 percent in February.
Nonfarm payroll employment also fell by 663,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That brings the number of jobs lost since the December 2007 start of the recession to 5.1 million.
Over the past year, the number of unemployed workers has grown by 5.3 million, and the unemployment rate has risen 3.4 percent.
Manufacturing employment fell by 161,000 in March while the construction industry lost 126,000 jobs. The professional and business services sector saw 133,000 jobs disappear. More than half of the jobs lost in that sector came from the temporary help services category.
The number of long-term unemployed, who have been without a job for 27 weeks or more, has increased by 1.9 million, to 3.2 million, since the recession began.
