Mount Wachusett Community College on Thursday announced is expanding a summer program where recent high school graduates can get paid to take classes before starting school in the fall.
The Academic Program Discovery Academy will let high school graduates or qualifying MWCC students take two classes over the summer for free. The program, funded through a $176,711 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, also gives students a stipend of $1,000, books for both courses, academic support and even a bus pass, if it’s needed.
The Discovery Academy is an expansion of MWCC’s STEM Starter Academy, which has offered free STEM-related courses to students during the summer before they enter college.
This summer’s Discovery Academy classes will be Philosophy 201: Introduction to Philosophical Issues and History 113: History of Contemporary Issues. Classes will take place between July 10 and Aug. 10 and the summer will end with students participating in the college’s leadership academy on Aug. 22 and 23.
