Jim Kenary

Age: 37
Title: Group Underwriting Consultant
Company: Unum
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Millbury

Career highlights:
After graduating from Providence College and after a brief stint in banking in the early 90s, I made the switch to insurance. I started my career in group insurance at Sun Financial in Wellesley Hills in January 1995. I began underwriting group life and disability insurance in 1997. I have been underwriting with Unum since 2000 and I have been promoted twice in that time period.

Community involvement:
I have been involved with the United Way of Central Massachusetts since 2001. I was Unum’s United Way campaign coordinator from 2001-2003 (I was co-chair and treasurer 2002). In 2002, I was awarded the “Outstanding Campaign Coordinator Award” by the United Way.  For last four years I have participated in the United Way’s Annual Day of Caring. In 2007, I was a member of the United Way’s “Ensuring Children’s Readiness for School Review” team. For three months we reviewed proposals for funding requests for a number of day care (infant-toddler and pre-school) facilities in the Worcester area. Our final recommendations went to the United Way board for approval in April. Prior to having children, I was a Big Brother for six years as part of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts.

Biggest success:
I would have to say being selected to participate in the Aspiring Leader’s Program at Unum in 2006 was my biggest success. It was the first year that underwriting participated in the program and I was one of only 10 underwriting employees selected to participate in a year-long management training program.

Dream job:
I would love to open the first group insurance sales office on Maui. I would have a three-day work week and my office would have a view of both the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. I always wanted to give sales a shot, why not give it a try it in Hawaii?

Businessperson he most admires and why:
I admire Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett. With an estimated fortune of more than $50 billion, the thing that caught my interest is his philanthropy and charitable giving. In 2006 Buffet made a commitment to give away most of his fortune to charity. The estimated donation of $30 billion would be the largest donation in U.S. history. Despite his wealth, Buffet never allowed money to corrupt or distort his lifestyle.
