Brian Kahn

Age: 32
Title: Director of Engineering, Content Personalization
Company: SeaChange International
Company location: Acton
Residence: Arlington

Career highlights:
I presently manage a team of 20 video and software engineers who are looking to the future to create products that will help the television industry provide far more personalized services for viewers, such as managing all of their personal media and favorite internet content on their TV.

For the past 10 years, I’ve been a manager and developer in engineering on a range of breakthrough products at SeaChange including the world’s first digital-into-digital advertising insertion system. Prior to joining SeaChange, I worked at I.D. Systems, which developed radio frequency identification (RFID) tags used by the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Community involvement:
I’ve really enjoyed being involved with Habitat for Humanity in Massachusetts. It’s been a good excuse to get together with some of my SeaChange colleagues outside of the office, but ultimately it’s extremely satisfying to see the results, which provide incredible opportunities for those less fortunate. In my spare time, I build furniture and other woodworking crafts and participate in the Eastern Massachusetts
Guild of Woodworkers, an organization that has periodically built and donated handmade furniture to local communities.

Biggest success:
There are two accomplishments that I’m most proud of: as an Emmy Award nominee, I was recognized for creating software that essentially cracked open a whole new segment of television advertising. My team also delivered a big precursor to personalized TV. We developed software that enables cable operators to capture programs from any source so that viewers can watch their favorite television on-demand. That technology is now used in more than 70 television operations around the world.

Dream job:
My ultimate job would be to build and design custom boats.

Businessperson he most admires and why:
I admire Bill Hewlett, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, for his management style, desire to raise the technological bar and commitment to his company’s employees. From the beginning, Hewlett believed in the idea that the right organization, people and environment can build innovative products. Hewlett, along with Dave Packard, built a company by design and a calculator by chance.
