IDC: Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Growth Slows

The mobile phone market saw year-over-year growth of 12.8 percent in the third quarter, with vendors shipping 393.7 million units, according to Framingham-based International Data Corp.

It was the second-lowest year-over-year growth rate in the past two years. Conservative consumer spending and delayed smartphone purchases in mature markets like North America and Europe led to the slowdown, IDC said.

Nokia remained the top global mobile phone vendor in the third quarter with 27.1 percent market share, down from 31.6 percent a year ago. Samsung's market share crept up to 22.3 percent from 20.5 percent a year ago.
