Harrington Joins Purchasing Coalition

Harrington Hospital in Southbridge has joined with more than 100 other hospitals in New England to form a purchasing coalition, which the hospital says will save 8 to 12 percent of medical supply costs.

The Northeast Purchasing Coalition LLC represents hospital with nearly 17,000 beds and 5,000 physicians, Harrington said.

Harrington said that by wielding more purchasing clout, it can offset declining reimbursements and increasing costs without cutting staff.

Harrington spokeswoman Blaine Schnare said Harrington will begin making purchases through the coalition as contracts and agreements expire. Schnare said Harrington has already saved thousands of dollars on purchasing surgeon's gloves and catheters.

Schnare said cost savings are not the only aim of the coalition. Member hospitals will communicate about best clinical practices and products.

Members of the coalition are all members of VHA Inc., a national health care network, which led the organization efforts. The coalition is a subgroup of Texas-based Novation, which specializes in supply contracting. The hospitals will maintain the authority to choose which products they buy, but the coalition will aim to standardize the types of products used wherever possible.
