$39M For WRTA Facility

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $39 million for the Worcester Regional Transit Authority’s new maintenance and operations center.

The 260,000-square-foot facility will be located near a planned bus hub at Union Station. It will include room for at least 50 vehicles, an operations center, parking for workers and fueling facilities.

The new center will replace the existing Grove Street building, which was converted from a “trolley barn” to a bus facility in the 1940s. It is designed with green features including water recycling, zero-maintenance building materials and natural lighting.

Deputy Federal Transit Administrator Therese McMillan announced the grant this morning, appearing at a press conference with Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray and local officials.
