Employers say time off is good, but mandated sick time is bad

Employers in Connecticut are generous with paid time off for employees, say advocates of employee wellness programs, and employers believe it is important for workers to take time for their own well-being, yet they remain steadfastly opposed to mandated sick time.

Those were the results of the Connecticut Business & Industry Association's Time Off Survey of 326 state businesses. The survey revealed that 69 percent of employers offer paid sick leave and 79 percent said the length of service has no bearing on the number of sick days. And more than a third of respondents said they offer 56 or more hours off during their first year of employment.

But Connecticut companies were strongly  against mandated sick leave by a 24 to 1 ratio because they felt it would negatively impact their companies. "A one-size-fits-all policy doesn't work for everyone," said Joseph Brennan, CBIA's senior vice president of public policy. "Companies need flexibility to determine which time-off policies work best for their workforce."
