The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has come out in support of a proposed Connecticut law that would turn a spotlight toward employers who may have wrongly classified employees as independent contractors.
The General Assembly is reviewing legislation that would create a task force to coordinate the investigation and prosecution of employers who are serially misclassifying workers.
The issue has been highlighted by a Connecticut investigation involving FedEx Corp. Drivers from Windsor FedEx Home Delivery have filed claims with the state for violations of wage and hour regulations, as well as unemployment insurance laws.
"The Teamsters fully support the establishment of a misclassification task force in Connecticut," said General President Jim Hoffa. "A multi-agency task force will close the loopholes, seal the cracks and see that all workers get the state protections and benefits they earn as employees."
