Consumer Confidence Falls In December

After improving in November, the Consumer Confidence Index, as measured by The Conference Board, fell from 54.3 to 52.5 in December.

Consumers are "tepid" about the current economic status and cautious about the outlook for the future, according to consumer research director Lynn Franco of The Conference Board.

The present situation index dropped from 25.4 to 23.5 while the expectations index fell from 73.6 in November to 71.9 in December. The indexes are measured on a 100-point scale.

The report is based on a survey of 5,000 households around the country.
