Change Hard For Employees To Take

A recent survey by Right Management, a division of Manpower, found that more than 30 percent of employees are unable to adapt to changes at work.

The survey findings also suggest that companies that want to change must be willing to account and adapt to human nature if they wish to succeed.

Right Management surveyed more than 100 human resource professionals across North America and found that the majority of employees are only partially suited to a changing work environment.

Forty-three percent of those surveyed answered that their staff "gets the job done, but morale suffers"; 31 percent believed that employee engagement and productivity are strongly at risk; and only 26 percent said that their workforce is "agile and responds to new challenges."

"Addressing the challenges created by today's tumultuous economy requires leaders to make a variety of difficult changes, from reductions in force to radical restructuring," Bruce Maxfield, Right Mangement's market vice president for Massachusetts, said in a press release. "Most organizations don't prepare their employees to handle changes at work. As a result change management strategies tend to fail, undermining the organization's ability to achieve the goals the change initiative was designed to produce."

According to Maxfield, the problems faced by the majority of employees stem from a lack of planning, preparedness and skill in managing the change process. He also said that an employer's failure to respond to these obstacles can lead to a drop in productivity, a decline in service quality, and increased turnover - all of which often lead to a tarnished brand and reputation.

Maxfield suggested that employers should implement tools to assess employees' ability to deal with change and should then provide coaching to help those who struggle.

"Understanding and developing the behaviors that help individuals adapt and thrive during change will enable organizations to realize significant benefits and ensure the company's continued success," Maxfield said.
