Keeping track of employees' performance and offering rewards in a fair, objective way is no easy task. Increasingly, employers say they're looking for technological solutions to help make it possible.
A recent survey by Towers Watson HR found that 42 percent of the companies it polled see "talent/performance systems" as a top concern when it comes to delivering HR services.
The survey reached 450 companies, the majority of them large corporations with more than 5,000 employees. Respondents were asked to name their three top HR service delivery issues for 2010.
The percentage of companies choosing "talent/performance systems" as a top issue shot up to 42 percent, from 35 percent last year. The next most popular choice was "streamlining processes/systems," at 35 percent, followed by "increased involvement in strategic business-driven issues" at 27 percent.
Towers Watson said the startup costs for talent management technologies can be significant, but the systems can allow employers to be more flexible and agile in handling their HR needs.
The firm said HR departments did not see severe cuts in their budgets during the recession. In 2009, just 36 percent of respondents said their budget for HR technology was down, and in 2010 that number shrank to 17 percent.
