BJ’s Wholesale Club has announced new measures related to the coronavirus pandemic, including temporarily raising the wages for front-line workers by $2 per hour, as well as donating $500,000 to nonprofits helping those impacted by the virus.

The Westborough-based retailer announced this week it would raise the pay of hourly workers by $2 per hour until at least April 12 with managers and key personnel receiving a one-time bonus ranging from $500 to $1,000 by the end of March. The company has instituted an emergency paid leave policy allowing for up to 14 days of pay while under quarantine as well as a waived absenteeism policy.

Company officials also said in the release BJ’s is actively hiring permanent and temporary workers through the eastern U.S. The company has created dedicated shopping hours from 8 to 9 a.m. for those over 60.

The BJ’s Charitable Foundation has donated $500,000 to organizations assisting those impacted by the coronavirus. Of that amount, $400,000 will be distributed to East Coast recipients including the Boston Foundation, the New York Community Trust, Community Foundation of New Jersey and United Way of Miami-Dade. The remaining $100,000 will be distributed to support Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund and to help assist its network of member food banks to meet the increased demand for meals.
