Framingham clean energy firm Ameresco completed an acquisition of a Los Alamitos, California microgrid. The system, located at a joint military forces training base, has a microgrid, solar panels, and battery energy storage.
Ameresco’s acquired a project on the system from Arizona-based Bright Canyon Energy, the company that built the microgrid on the base, according to a Thursday press release from Ameresco.
This is the first phase in a two-part acquisition. In phase two, Ameresco will acquire Bright Canyon and its subsidiaries. The target date to complete the second acquisition is later in 2023.
Financial terms for both acquisitions were not disclosed.
Ameresco will work to expand the capacity of the California energy plant, which was designed as a backup to fully power the military base and provide energy to surrounding communities. The acquisition includes 100 acres of land from the U.S. Army. The microgrid in place has the capacity to power 5,000 residential homes in the surrounding area.
Under the terms of the acquisition, the joint forces training base will continue to operate at Southern California’s emergency response hub.
