The renovation of the Boston Athletic Association’s facility near the starting line of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton was completed in time for the 2025 edition of the historic race.
The renovation saw the building at 1 Ash St. renovated to create a museum-like experience, featuring an open display room, archive room, and storage areas, as well as a new lounge, fitness room, and meeting spaces. BAA is the organizer of the Boston Marathon.
The project was designed by Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects of Hopkinton, with construction handled by Votze-Butler Associates of Lowell, according to a Tuesday press release from GRLA.
“We are grateful to Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects for their partnership with this renovation project at our One Ash Street office,” Jack Fleming, president and CEO of the Boston Athletic Association, said in the press release. “When we took ownership of this historic building, we wanted to be intentional in how we cared for it as we respected its past while bringing it forward for our future use. A building with such history needed to be altered with care while ensuring that accessibility was front and center in all the planning.”
Accessibility-focused aspects of the renovation included the widening of doors and installation of a lift to allow for second-floor access.
Boston Athletic Association purchased the site for $1.2 million in 2016 from The Academy Realty Trust of Natick, according to Middlesex South Registry of Deeds records. The association purchased the building to help facilitate organizing of the race, according to a Worcester Telegram & Gazette article from the time of the sale.
