Ameresco to build $8M microgrid project in New Brunswick

Ameresco, a Framingham-based company specializing in energy resiliency projects, is working with a city in New Brunswick, Canada, to construct a microgrid project involving what the company says will be the largest rooftop solar installation in Atlantic Canada.

The SOLSTICE microgrid project, which will involve a solar installation with a 1-megawatt capacity and a 2 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, will help the City of Edmundston enhance the resilience of its power grid and meet peak energy demands, according to an Ameresco press release issued Tuesday.

“The SOLSTICE project demonstrates how critical solar and battery energy storage solutions are for strengthening grid resilience and advancing clean energy,” Bob McCullough, president of Ameresco Canada, said in the press release. “As cities worldwide work to transition to sustainable energy, projects like this showcase how innovative solutions can provide reliable, clean power to meet today’s demands and secure a sustainable future for communities everywhere.”

Valued at $8 million, the project will integrate with the City’s existing energy management systems, with the solar array being installed on the roofs of a local sporting arena. The project is expected to come online in the summer of 2025 and is expected to offset approximately 360 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Ameresco has engaged in a number of large-scale projects since December 2023, including two energy projects in Hawaii and an energy storage project in the United Kingdom
