As chairman of the board of the 2,100-member Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, tax guru, nonprofit leader, and biochemist, Satya Mitra’s influence in Worcester is decidedly multilayered.
Mitra founded his firm 34 years ago in the basement of his Worcester home, offering clients expertise in taxation, financial planning, and wealth management. He provides advice to listeners of a weekly AM radio program on WCRN, which he said gives him immense satisfaction. Never one to turn someone away, Mitra has provided pro bono services to people in need at the office.
“Helping people in our community stands as our primary priority,” Mitra said.
Mitra came to America from his native India to pursue a career in biomedical research. While working at a Worcester pharmaceutical company, he took courses on tax laws and investments. He became hooked and jumped into the field. Today, with offices on Main Street in Worcester, The Guru Tax & Financial Services serves more than 400 clients across the U.S. and globally.
It’s a journey Mitra describes as divine, and it’s inspired him to give back. He is the founder of Joy Guru Humanitarian Services, a charitable nonprofit with roughly $332,000 in assets at the end of 2022, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Last year, Joy Guru made a $25,000 donation to the Nativity School of Worcester to help establish its girls school and a second $25,000 contribution to support elderly residents evacuated from city housing due to flooding caused by frozen pipes.
