The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce is encouraging the business community to advocate for a smaller split between the commercial and residential tax rate for city property owners at a hearing at Worcester City Hall on Tuesday night.
The chamber is expected to advocate for the adoption of line 181 of the city tax table at the 7 p.m. hearing, which would enact a commercial tax rate of $31.19 for businesses and a residential rate $19.94 for homeowners.
This would push Worcester toward a single tax rate, which business boosters see as an important tool to encourage development in the city.
However, according to a statement on Monday from Stuart Loosemore, director of public affairs and government policy at the Worcester Regional Chamber, the odds of this rate being adopted aren’t strong. He said it is more likely that city councilors will vote to increase the divide between commercial and residential tax rates, thereby raising real estate taxes on businesses by an average of $377.
