Worcester School Gets Solar Panel Funding

Worcester's North High School is one of nine schools approved by the Massachusetts Renewable Energy Trust for funding to install solar panels.

The trust also awarded funding to schools for green school design work and for a combination of design work and solar panel installation. In all, the trust approved $3 million for 16 projects.

North High will get between $150,000 and $300,000 for a solar panel installation on the school's roof. The funding comes from the trust's Green Schools Initiative, and the Commonwealth Solar rebate program.

The amount the school receives is contingent upon its Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools score. That score is a rating based on a school's implementation of a variety of energy-saving features and conservation measures.

The trust estimates that "high performance" green schools save an average of 25 percent in energy costs over traditional schools.
