Worcester County COVID cases, deaths holding steady at relatively low numbers

Worcester County continues to see relatively low numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases towards the end of August as case numbers remain fair below their spring peaks.

The county had 185 new coronavirus cases, and an estimated 20 deaths in the most recent week, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This compares to last week ending Aug. 19, which had 180 new cases and 10 fatalities.

The new cases add to the now 14,032 confirmed coronavirus cases in Worcester County, and the fatalities bring the total death toll to 1,043.

Statewide, in the past week through Wednesday, confirmed cases have increased by 2,037, adding to the 125,417 overall. Massachusetts has had 110 new fatalities this week adding to the 8,755 to date.

DPH reports 19,744 newly administered coronavirus tests between Aug. 20 and Aug. 26.

The City of Worcester reported 5,803 total coronavirus cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic as of Thursday. This is an increase of 87 new cases since the prior week, the highest weekly number in the past month.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported 20 coronavirus inpatient cases this week, with five in intensive care. Between the hospitals, they have had 365 coronavirus-related deaths to date, and 399 employees have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.

MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick reported 15 inpatients this week, and Milford Regional Medical Center reported three. In total, the hospitals reported one in intensive care. HealthAlliance in Leominster reported one inpatient case.

Nationally, there are now more than 5.8 million cases reported with 180,857 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there are close to 24.5 million cases with 832,433 deaths. 

A note on the coronavirus figures

State and Worcester County cases and deaths are weekly as of each Wednesday. City of Worcester numbers are weekly as of each Thursday. The state began adding probable cases and deaths to confirmed ones beginning June 1. Worcester County’s case total included confirmed and suspected cases through Aug. 12, after which it includes only confirmed cases. Worcester County’s death total was revised downward by four on June 30, and is an estimate based on state-reported totals through early August, and estimated numbers from that point forward based on most recent two-week reporting. The City of Worcester retroactively added cases on June 4. State and county data is according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Worcester data is according to the City of Worcester.
