Worcester Academy will freeze tuition for the 2022-2023 academic year, according to a Monday press release from the independent boarding school.
In the announcement, School Head Kevin Breen said the decision is part of the Academy's commitment to affordability, as increased inflation and the coronavirus have created new challenges for students’ families.
Worcester Academy has more than 500 enrolled students, half of whom receive financial aid. Tuition is $56,000 for boarding students and about $40,000 for day students, per the school's website. The school has a $60 million endowment.
“Although the school is dealing with increased expenses and the reality that tuition revenue does not cover the cost of operating our school, affordability is a strategic priority,” Breen said in a statement. “The Academy believes this new pricing is consistent with its desire to strengthen our partnership with our families and the city we call home.”
The tuition freeze will not delay investments and projects, including renovations of two great halls, the announcement said.
Several colleges froze tuition last year in light of financial struggles related to the coronavirus pandemic. Framingham State University announced in January it would continue its tuition freeze another year.
