Worcester-based nonprofit Veterans Inc. has received $3.3 million from the state to build housing for homeless veterans in Shrewbury.
According to the Patrick administration, the Department of Housing and Community Development will fund 35 new units of affordable housing units that Veterans Inc. will build at an underutilized facility.
"Creating affordable housing helps to generate jobs, grow local businesses and strengthen our communities," Gov. Deval Patrick said. "Government's role is to help people help themselves, and these resources will help provide affordable and reliable housing opportunities for our veterans who have sacrificed so much for our commonwealth and our nation."
Veterans' Services Secretary Coleman Nee said such projects will help Massachusetts become the first state to end homelessness among veterans. A recent plan released by the administration outlines a goal to reduce the number of homeless veterans in the state by 1,000 by 2015, which would virtually eliminate homelessness in that population, it said.
Denis Leary, executive director of Veterans Inc., said the funding will help the organization strengthen existing services, expand support and focus on health care and workforce needs of veterans.
