Venture capital investment rose 35 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2011 to a total of $6.4 billion, according to Dow Jones VentureSource.
The total number of deals rose 5 percent, bringing the median amount raised in a financing round to $5 million for the quarter, compared to $4.4 million in Q1 2010.
VentureSource said much of the increase came from large deals in capital-intensive industries like renewable energy, health care and information technology.
