Worcester-based nonprofit Massachusetts Education and Career Opportunities, which operates across the state and is more commonly referred to as MassEdCo, has been awarded $11.3 million in funding over the next five years from the U.S. Department of Education, according to a Friday press release.
The funding was jointly announced by Rep. Jim McGovern and MassEdCo CEO Mark Bilotta, and will go toward backing the group’s education and career readiness services, which it provides to low-income and underrepresented students and adults.
“All our programs are designed to provide low-income, underrepresented students and adults with free postsecondary education advising services which assist them in making sound academic/career and financial choices,” Bilotta said in a statement. “Those services range from career exploration to college application assistance, financial literacy and financial aid counseling.”
The funding will be used to support MassEdCO’s Educational Opportunity Centers, which serve 7,000 adults around the state, according to the announcement. A portion of the funding will also be used to support the nonprofit’s Talent Search program, which provides services to some 800 students in Worcester, Southbridge and New Bedford.
