After three months of the national unemployment rate holding steady at 9.6 percent, it rose to 9.8 percent in November, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Even though the economy added 39,000 jobs last month, there are still 15.1 million Americans out of work. An estimated 42 percent of those unemployed have been without a job for more than 27 weeks. There are another 2.5 million Americans that were not counted as being unemployed because they have stopped looking for work for at least a month.
Most industries had little change in employment figures, although the temporary employment sector grew by about 40,000 jobs in November. Almost a half-million temporary workers have been hired in the last year. Health care also posted 19,000 new jobs. Retail employment dropped 28,000 jobs last month. The manufacturing sector, after posting job gains through the first five months of the year, has remained flat since this summer.
