UMass Prez Search Moving Forward

The University of Massachusetts Presidential Search Committee said it is making progress and will be conducting second interviews with some candidates next month.

President Jack M. Wilson has said he will step down from the position when his current term ends on June 30.

The search process, which has been going on for nine months, made headlines in November when UMass Lowell Chancellor Martin T. Meehan withdrew from consideration for the position.

Gov. Deval Patrick had reportedly expressed concern that Meehan, who is a former U.S. congressman, might be seen as a political pick for the job because of his connections.

The search committee will recommend finalist candidates to the system's board of trustees, which will elect the new president.
