Tylden (Ty) Dowell

Age: 29
Title: President
Company: Executive Office Suite
Company location: Marlborough
Residence: Boston

Career highlights:
I own and manage an Executive Office Suite in Marlborough. I bought the business with a partner one year ago (July 1, 2006) from two women who started it in 1986. Before doing this I worked as an operations analyst for Sam Adams Beer. When the opportunity to become my own boss presented itself, I jumped!

Community involvement:
I currently reside in Boston, and I’ve traditionally volunteered my time in that area. My strongest connection is with Historic New England. I volunteer for its Young Friends group; we are trying to get more young people in the Boston area interested in historic preservation. Right now I am very focused on becoming more active in the MetroWest area. It’s my goal to meet new people and learn more about this region of Massachusetts. I’m devoting time to the Marlborough Eduction Fund and Employment Options Inc.

Biggest success:
Owning and being 100 percent responsible for a business at 28-years-old has been a tremendous accomplishment for me. I am continually and pleasantly surprised by my clients who offer their praise for the improvements I have made to this business. One client in particular (a Harvard Business School graduate) recently let me know that if I have been able to improve my facility to such a degree while maintaining and improving profit levels then I am truly cut out for business. I was flattered by that compliment and consider the work I’ve done to get to this point my greatest success to date.

Dream job:
Working for myself is honestly a dream come true. I’d like to continue to grow this business into multiple locations. Franchising the business in the future is my long-term goal.

Businessperson he most admires and why:
I most admire my business partner, Cliff Schorer. He started his company, The Bottom Line Exchange Co., when he was 19 years old. The company has since developed from a one-person, catalog-based furniture sales business into a dynamic octopus of a corporation with tentacles in numerous business models. He has been able to leverage his personal interests into unique and profitable business entities. In my opinion, this is the ultimate way to work — being successful at the activities you love.
