Susan Feeney

Age: 37
Title: Founder, Owner
Company: Direct Associates
Company location: Northborough
Residence: Northborough

Career highlights:
At Bentley College, I discovered the specialty of direct marketing and knew it was what I wanted to do — create marketing that is measurable. I gained my experience in both the agency and corporate worlds. In 2004, after much soul searching, I decided to start my own company — Direct Associates. Starting my own company offered me an opportunity to blend my passions — direct marketing, client service and growing a business. It also fit my need to be challenged, to be the “director” of my destiny and to be empowered. And as a bonus, create balance in my life for my real passion — my family.

Community involvement:
I have learned valuable lessons while building Direct Associates. During the Minority and Woman-Owned Business Enterprise certification process, I became acquainted with several organizations that help women and minority entrepreneurs. I want to encourage other women and share my hard-earned lessons early in their decision-making process. I became involved with Center for Women Enterprise and teach a seminar “Steps to Starting Your Business.” I try to encourage and guide a wide variety of women in varying stages of the decision-making process for a wonderfully eclectic array of business ideas. I also am actively involved with church and my children’s school programs.

Biggest success:
My biggest success is the success of my company. We quadrupled our business in year two, doubling that in year three. Starting, running and growing my own business has provided challenges I would not have had as an employee. Learning to live with unpredictability and risk has challenged me in ways that I never expected. And, I am very proud of our progress, success and, most importantly, the growth I have experienced professionally.

Dream job:
I am living my dream job now. I love working with clients; really smart marketing; and having my own business.

Businessperson she most admires and why:
At career midpoint, I worked for Directech whose principal was Peter Evans. He was a generous mentor with an extraordinary work ethic, leadership style and business acumen. I still appreciate how very rare and fortunate it was to have him as a teacher and a friend.
