Tutor-Perini Switches Coasts

Construction company Tutor-Perini Corp. announced Wednesday that it has moved its headquarters from Framingham to Los Angeles.

Perini Corp. has been located in Massachusetts for more than a century, but last year merged with California-based Tutor Saliba, a private construction firm owned by Perini CEO Ron Tutor.

"We think it's the best location for us to carry out our primary business," said Kenneth R. Burk, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Tutor Perini. "We have business on both coasts and we'll still maintain an office in Framingham."

Burk said the move will include moving some administrative staff to California from Framingham and will allow for some staff consolidation. He estimates there will be less than 30 positions cut.

The company has been considering a move since its merger last year and Burk said work in Massachusetts has slowed considerably.

"We haven't seen much work at all," he said. "We see more opportunities in California."

The move was announced in a press release, complete with glowing quotes from Los Angeles's Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

"This is a great day for jobs in Los Angeles," the mayor was quoted as saying in the press release.

The company has undertaken numerous projects in the Los Angeles area recently, including a new $234 million Los Angeles Police headquarters.

Julian Suso, town manager of Framingham, said he's only heard reports that Perini is relocating their headquarters.

"The town of Framingham would deeply regret the relocation of the historic Perini Corporation," Suso said in a press release. "This prestigious company has been an integral part of the economy and history of the town of Framingham as well as the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts."

The combined company has more than 3,000 workers and last year posted revenue of $5.6 billion.
