The Mary Ann Morse Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Natick is planning a $5 million expansion and renovation.
Lisa Kubiak, the center's executive director, said the expansion proposal is now waiting on approval from the state Department of Public Health and the local zoning and planning departments.
The plan includes a two-story expansion of slightly less than 10,000 square feet, providing more space in the Alzheimer's/dementia unit and the short-term unit.
Kubiak said there is an increasing need for short-term rehabilitation care for people recovering from anything from a hip replacement to pneumonia.
"The trend out there is that you don't see as much of the long-term," she said. "Our whole focus is to get people reconditioned so they can get back into the community."
Kubiak said another purpose of the project is to provide more space for dementia patients and offer a state-of-the-art facility for all residents.
"It's sort of giving a more homelike feel to the long-term and dementia units," she said.
Kubiak said she hopes to get all the necessary approvals for the construction by the end of the year and have work begin in the spring. If everything went perfectly, she said, the project could be completed by the end of 2010.
The current rough estimate for the project's cost is $5 million, Kubiak said, but that could change as it moves forward.
According to its web site, Mary Ann Morse is a 123-bed facility operated by Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Corp., which also runs an assisted living community in Framingham.
Approximately 900,000 people live in assisted living facilities in the United States, according to the National Center for Assisted Living.
