State regulators have opted against pursing cost and market impact reviews for a pair of healthcare deals.
The Health Policy Commission announced its decision Monday, following a preliminary review of the acquisition of in-home health care service provider LHC Group by UnitedHealth Group, and a clinical affiliation between Commonwealth Radiology Associates and Tufts Medical Center.
Under the clinical affiliation, which has an effective date of Jan. 1, 2023, Commonwealth Radiology Associates will be the exclusive provider of professional radiology services to Tufts Medical Center. CRA is already the provider of radiology services at other Tufts Medicine acute care hospitals, Tufts said in regulatory filings.
UnitedHealth Group said the combination of LHC Group with Optum Health, a UnitedHealth subsidiary that works with more than 100 health plans, "unites two organizations decided to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to patients and their families."
In filings, UnitedHealth said the LHC Group leadership team would continue as part of Optum Health and that the acquisition would not have an "immediate impact" on LHC Group reimbursement rates or referral patterns. The effective date of the transaction is listed as "the first half of 2023."
State law requires the HPC to monitor health care industry provider changes and consolidations for potential impacts on costs, patient care and market competitiveness.
